Aliso Viejo is a lovely town roughly midway between Los Angeles and San Diego on the California coast. It's just off California Highway 73, within easy reach of Interstate 5. Given this location, the town is a fine choice, not just for those who work in neighboring Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach or Mission Viejo, but also for anyone commuting north as far as Long Beach or south to Oceanside or Carlsbad. With just a bit of a commuting push, the "big cities," north and south, are also well within reach. John Wayne Airport, servicing all Orange County, is just a short drive inland.
Houses are quite reasonably priced for the West Coast. Without even digging deep for bargain hunting, you'll be able to find three-bedroom houses in the $400,000 range, two bedroom houses in the middle $200,000s. Two bedroom townhomes are available at just under $200,000. However, with a little digging and a helpful real estate agent it won't be hard to find even a 3BR in the low $200,000s. This is perfect for a Midwestern family looking to trade snowy winters for some California sunshine. Its also perfect for young professionals starting up their families.
This isn't just a bedroom community where people go to work elsewhere. Aliso Viejo is headquarters to numerous companies. Most of these are software or high-tech oriented, but they include some other big names.
Marie Callender's, the restaurant chain and packaged food giant, has its headquarters here. So does Ketel One Vodka. These two companies give some idea of the culture: they're popular, appealing to a general clientele, but within that range, high quality. Insurance giant Pacific Life makes its headquarters here as well.
There's plenty of cultural life nearby, starting with the Orange County Performing Arts Center in neighboring Costa Mesa. This season's features include jazz legend Sonny Rollins, the San Francisco Ballet, the Jerusalem String Quartet and the National Acrobats of China. And that's just one venue, the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Beyond that is Orange County's Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, and the Pacific Chorale, all making their home at the Segerstrom Concert Hall.
For marine recreation there's Dana Point, and just a bit further up-road, Newport Launch. You can take a live music boat cruise for just ten dollars. Then, once a year, the gray whale migrations visit off shore. They're a spectacular view, and you can get closer still by tour boat, even jump into the water with them. The rest of the year there are numerous dolphin to play with.
Just south lies the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, 7,000 acres of hiking, bike trails, and equestrian recreation. Boating, fishing, and of course, surfing are also available at the park. So are tennis, volleyball and other sports. Needless to say, the Park is also quite a nice place to get away and do absolutely nothing.
Aliso Viejo, with a population of about 50,000, is serviced by a fine school system. Most of the public schools, including both middle schools, rank 8 out of 10 or higher. Aliso Niguel High School is just a little bit off that pace. There are numerous private school options available, too, including a Montessori school, a Catholic school, and a Protestant Christian school.
This is a quality town in a wonderful part of the California Coast. Best of all, it's affordable. Founded in 2001, Aliso Viejo has a bright future, and you might just want to be part of it.
